All clients have distinct aspirations for their projects, but working to design Evelyn & Angel’s candy store was a special treat (pun intended), because it was one of those projects that allowed me to help a client realize a lifelong dream. The owner has been an attorney her entire professional life, but always dreamed of opening up a little candy store on the side. The name is a tribute to her mother, Angel, who had worked in a candy store, and her grandmother Evelyn.

While the old adage may be about feeling like a kid in a candy store, the vision for Evenly and Angel’s was an upscale retailer that puts a sophisticated twist to a classic sweets shop.  Inspired by traditional French patisserie or chocolate shops, I worked directly with the owner to pull in elegant pieces – cherry showcases, elegant brass chandeliers and sconce – with touches of vintage – old candy posters and chalk board menus. To add a bit of whimsy and lightness, I used tall millwork in a candy-colored light shade of green.

Beyond the design, I oversaw the entire construction and installation process. This included working with a talented furniture craftsman for custom millwork, the distinct cherry wood cabinets, handsome moldings and custom candy shoots, which display a delectable array of colorful taffy candies.

The finished store is refined, yet welcoming. It’s a space that gives customers a taste and feel of the sweet life.
